| Latest News & Reviews Hitachi Promises 4TB Hard Drives Hitachi has created the world's smallest disk drive heads, an advance the company claims will quadruple today's storage limits to 4 terabytes for desktop computers and 1 terabyte on laptops in 2011. Hitachi's new technology, dubbed CPP-GMR, features a nanoscale magneto-resistive head with perpendicular current that allows the company to increase the density of drives. Other hard drive makers are working on similar technology, and IDC predicts the entire disk drive industry will begin migrating to this new type of GMR-based technology in 2009.
McDonald's to offer free WiFi The fast food chain will make free WiFi available in 1,200 U.K. outlets by the end of this year. Customers will be able to go online via their laptops, compatible mobile phones and games consoles.
Vista Upgrade Coming Jan. 2008 Microsoft finally puts out details of Service Pack 1, the long-awaited first major upgrade of Windows Vista. SP1 will be available to the public in January 2008 and will come to Vista users as a 50 MB download. In addition to security upgrades, SP1 will fix Vista's slow copying and unzipping of files, and address delays people experience when they resume their machines from hibernation. Microsoft is also going to put out another service pack for Windows XP, the third since that last-generation OS debuted in 2001. It will be the last major revision of XP.
Vista Sells Well for Microsoft Vista closes on 40m: Microsoft has sold nearly 40m Windows Vista licenses in the first 100 days the operating system has been on sale.
AMD 'Phenom' Going Quad-Core AMD reveals the name of its quad-core desktop processors due later this year. The Phenom brand will become the mark for AMD's performance chips, while the Athlon 64 X2 brand will remain for mainstream chips and Sempron will continue to bring up the rear. AMD is banking on its design philosophy behind the Phenom chips and their server counterparts, code-named Barcelona, to trump Intel's quad-core offerings. Those chips are based on a "multichip modules" -- essentially two of Intel's dual-core chips welded together -- while AMD chose to build a single chip with four cores.
Michael Dell BACK as CEO of Dell ! Kevin Rollins resigns as CEO of Dell, and the PC maker's namesake founder once again resumes control of day-to-day operations. Rollins' departure comes after a difficult year for the company, after losing its lead in PC market share to HP, mounting customer service complaints, a recall of 4.1m notebook batteries, and an investigation by U.S. authorities for possible accounting improprieties. Now Michael Dell faces the daunting task of rebuilding the PC giant...
Airline fears battery threat... Virgin Atlantic bans the use of battery-powered Apple or Dell laptop computers on international flights after recalls over fears they could overheat and catch fire.
Dell launches massive laptop battery recall Hardware giant Dell is to recall more than four million laptop batteries because of a fire risk. The company announced the move in co-operation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and other regulatory bodies. The recall will cover around 4.1 million Dell-branded lithium-ion batteries. "...it is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could cause a risk of fire," Dell warned. The recall is not the first for the hardware giant. In December, Dell recalled 22,000 laptop computer batteries because of fire risks from overheating. Last month, the company confirmed it was investigating why one of its laptops exploded at a conference in Japan. Pictures showing flames bursting from the laptop were posted on the web.
REDMOND CONFIRMS IPOD RIVAL After months of rumors, Microsoft confirms plans to create a handheld music player under a brand called "Zune'' that will compete with Apple's iPod. Microsoft does not provide many details, but analysts believe the company will likely create a WiFi-enabled music player that works with other devices such as the Xbox 360. Before now, Microsoft participated in digital music through partners such as iRiver or Creative. But because those partners have failed to knock Apple from the top spot, Microsoft decides to provide the entire product itself.
AMD ACQUIRES ATI CPU maker, AMD reaches a deal to buy GPU maker, ATI in a deal valued at $5.4b. The marriage will likely produce new approaches to component design, offering a variety of CPU/GPU-integrated solutions optimized to service specific applications, which executives at both companies refer to as "customer-centric platforms." The deal also gives AMD access to ATI's CE business, including display processors for both home entertainment and handheld devices. With new approaches to end-to-end products, AMD may yet again pressure Intel to rethink its business, just as the chipmaker begins to catch up on dual core technology.
GATES TO LOG OUT OF MICROSOFT In a surprise announcement, Bill Gates says he will step down from his daily duties at Microsoft in two years to focus on his charitable foundation. "I believe that with great wealth comes great responsibility," says Gates, who adds the decision is "not a retirement" but a chance to "reorder my personal priorities." Ballmer said he expects Gates to become the "greatest philanthropist of all time." Ray Ozzie, a tech wiz who joined Microsoft last year when it acquired his company Groove Networks, takes on the role of chief software architect.

LG backs HD DVD One of the world's biggest optical drive makers, LG is the second high-profile Blu-ray supporter to change position, as the company follows HP's decision to also support HD DVD alongside Blu-ray.
SONY PS3 DELAYED A YEAR? Sony may be forced to delay its next-generation PlayStation 3 video game console by 6-12 months, waiting for the final specs for the device's Blu-Ray DVD drive and input and output technology for video and sound. Analysts warn the new, complex technology made PS3 "prohibitively expensive to make" at nearly $900 per unit to produce initially. The delay gives rivals such as Microsoft, whose Xbox 360 sells for $400, and Nintendo the chance to make gains against Sony's 70% market share.
Nasty Nyxem virus set to strike... The BBC reports a new virus threat "Computer security firms are bracing themselves as the moment approaches when the Nyxem virus will strike. On 3 February the bug will start erasing Word documents, spreadsheets and other common files on infected PCs. SEAGATE TO ACQUIRE MAXTOR Seagate, the world's leading disk-drive maker, plans to acquire No.3 Maxtor in a stock swap worth $1.9b.
INTEL's NEW BRAND IDENTITY The chipmaker drops its 37-year-old logo and "Intel Inside" tagline (but the related marketing program remains) in a major rebranding designed to shift focus from its core PC business to its platform strategy. The new "Leap ahead" theme reflects Intel's belief that consumer demand for digital media and networking will drive its business in the coming years. The man behind Intel's brand overhaul, Eric Kim, comes from Samsung and is credited with the meteoric rise of the Korean brand.
NEXT DVD STANDARD DVD battle rages on... Toshiba announces the launch of HD DVD players in March, while Sony says it will be ready to accept orders for Blu-ray discs on a worldwide basis the same month. Michael Dell, joining Sony's Stringer on stage, says his company will be ready to deliver PCs with Blu-ray capability. | |
